Advent Labelers Case Study

10 Sep 2024 Case Study, B&R, ABB

Situation:

Faced with the challenge of improving ease of use and enhancing the operator’s experience, Advent Labelers sought a solution that would modernize their labeling machines. The current system required frequent manual adjustments, which hindered operational efficiency. Recognizing the benefits of a modern digital platform, they decided to upgrade to a PLC/HMI system.

Mission:

B&K Electric Wholesale was tasked with designing and implementing a fully digital control platform to minimize manual intervention and enhance usability. The goal was to provide an interface that allowed operators to adjust machine settings, save different recipes, and improve overall efficiency without compromising on the machine’s original performance. The system had to integrate seamlessly with the existing setup, maintaining consistent results and functionality while fitting within the physical constraints of the machine.

Execution:

Partnering with B&R Automation, the team focused on developing a flexible and reliable system that would take advantage of B&R’s technology providing a modern solution. This setup provided a user-friendly interface, enabling operators to easily select applications and adjust settings. A key challenge was building the program from scratch to ensure the new system maintained the machine’s original functionality. By integrating B&R’s incredibly small yet powerful HMI/PLC combo along with B&R’s X20 I/O hardware, the solution successfully modernized the system while keeping it compact enough to fit within the existing layout.

Result:

The new digital platform significantly improved the machine’s ease of use, with a streamlined interface that reduced setup time and allowed for greater flexibility. Operators could easily select and adjust jobs via the HMI, making the machine much more efficient. The system upgrade resulted in a high-tech, user-friendly product that met the client’s goals and enhanced the overall functionality of the machine.
